A modern caravan power system stores energy, manages different charging sources and supplies power to the appliances and equipment in your caravan.

DC-DC Charger

A DC-DC charger allows the caravan battery system to charge from the tow vehicle while travelling.

When mains power is available, a suitable battery charger can recharge and maintain the caravan battery bank.

Solar Regulator / MPPT

A solar regulator manages the power coming from the solar panels and uses it to safely charge the battery bank.

Inverter

An inverter converts the battery’s DC power into 240V AC power for suitable appliances.

A power management and monitoring system lets you see what is happening within the electrical system.

How Much Battery Capacity Do You Need?

There isn’t one battery size that’s right for every caravan.

The important question is:

How much energy do you expect to use between opportunities to recharge?

A relatively simple caravan running lighting, water pumps, device charging and an efficient compressor fridge may have modest requirements.

Add regular use of an inverter, induction cooking or other high-powered appliances and the required battery capacity can increase substantially.

Rather than choosing a battery based purely on its Ah rating, start by estimating your typical daily energy consumption.

Complete Caravan Power System or Individual Components?

There are two common approaches when planning a caravan electrical system.

You can select the battery charger, DC-DC charger, solar regulator, inverter, monitoring equipment, batteries and associated components individually.

Alternatively, an integrated or pre-assembled power management system can bring many of these functions together.

Neither approach is automatically better for every build.

Heavy Vehicle Registration Assessment Scheme (HVRAS) will end on 30 June 2026.
For many caravan and trailer businesses, as well as DIY builders working on custom projects,
this is a small but important compliance update worth noting.

This update is relevant for caravan builders, trailer manufacturers, and DIY caravan projects requiring engineering compliance in Queensland.


What is HVRAS?

HVRAS is a registration assessment scheme that has been used to support certain heavy vehicle
registration and modification assessment processes. In practical terms, it has been part of the broader

Starting 1 July 2025, Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ) will introduce electronic gas certificates (E-certificates), phasing out printed certificate books for gas system compliance in Queensland. This Queensland gas compliance certificate changes 2025 marks a major shift for all caravan builders, gas fitters, and vehicle registration processes involving gas systems.


What’s Changing?

Hardcopy certificate books will be replaced with free digital PDF documents accessible via the RSHQ Portal, including:

  • Gas system compliance certificates
  • Defect notices
  • Vehicle/vessel gas inspection certificates

These documents will be emailed to the licence holder, who can then forward them to customers or relevant parties.

Transition Period

  • You may continue using existing hardcopy books until 1 January 2026.
  • After that, only E-certificates will be valid.
  • No refunds will be provided for unused printed books or compliance plates. Manage your stock accordingly.

What Installers Must Do

When completing a gas installation, the installer must:

  • Provide the customer with a copy of the E-certificate (email or printed)
  • Attach or update the gas compliance plate on the caravan or vehicle
  • If connected to a fuel gas network, submit a copy to the system operator within 5 business days
  • Retain a copy for at least 3 years

Registering a Caravan in Queensland

To register a gas-equipped caravan, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) still requires proof of gas compliance.
As they don’t have access to the RSHQ system:

  • You must provide either a printed certificate or
  • The certificate number at the time of registration

Additional Information

  • All licensed gas workers have received 10 free E-certificates
  • Bundles of 50 E-certificates are available for purchase
  • The Queensland Government is reviewing the requirement for physical compliance plates
